Port Louis is the unique seaport in Mauritius. It compares favourably with the seaports of more developed countries in terms of modernisation, given that it keeps up to date with technological changes occurring in the maritime transportation and containerised cargo systems. Port-Louis handles about 4.8 million tonnes of cargo annually including a container traffic of about 160,000 TEU. Some 1900 vessels call at Port-Louis annually.
The country thus situates well to ensure timely delivery of products to its African neighbours.
Mauritius being member to the regional trading blocs SADC (Southern African Development Community) and COMESA, provides preferential access to about 25 Southern and Eastern African countries. On the other hand, Mauritius is a beneficiary of the Cotonou and AGOA trade agreements which enable duty free access to Europe and the US for goods satisfying certain rules of origin. Added to that, several major shipping lines such as Maersk, P&O Nedlloyd, MSC, Mitsui and Evergreen use Mauritius as their transshipment hub. This ensures frequent connections to the region at very competitive rates.
